PORT AUX BASQUES, N.L. — A pod of porpoises was struggling to free itself in a western Newfoundland bay after becoming trapped in ice close to shore.
Residents of Cape Ray say the large group of porpoises was struggling to move Sunday, as very little open water remained near the shore.
Footage posted online shows the water tinged red with blood as the animals tried to get free.
Resident Tommy Anderson found the animals in an area north of the community known locally as Northwest Cove.
He estimates there are about three dozen of the animals, who he said were making sounds as they got pushed closer to shore.
