Westville - Three Pictou County locations have been shortlisted for a new $31-million correctional facility in northern Nova Scotia.
The location of the three sites have not been released, but Pictou East MLA Clarrie MacKinnon says that some of them are located in his riding.
The sites are among eight that have been short-listed for the region, says Justice Minister Ross Landry. Reports have indicated that two other sites that are under consideration are located in Colchester County.
"We've short-listed eight sites between Antigonish and Truro," Landry confirmed Friday.
The sites are currently being analyzed by the province, which Landry hopes will be complete by March 1.
"I'll review the analysis and make my recommendations, then forward it to my colleagues," he said.
"When the decision is made, it will be the one that's in the best interests of Correctional Services and the taxpayers of Nova Scotia.
The jail will replace the aging Spring Hill facility and Landry has previously gone on the record saying that the new jail will need to be located in the busiest areas, and currently, the largest court traffic is occurring in New Glasgow, Pictou and Truro.
Landry has indicated that he would like to see the jail located in Pictou County and says he has received significant support from local governments and organizations, lobbying for the site to be located in the county.
"We've had a very active response," he said.
The jail will employ more than 110 people and house 100 inmates.
