NEW GLASGOW – A man who police watched leave the Roseland in the early morning hours of Feb. 7 and start a vehicle has been given a one-year driving prohibition.
Edward William Hughes, 29, of Mountville Road, was spotted by New Glasgow Police around 3:45 a.m. on Provost Street. He was charged after police watched him climb behind the wheel of a car and turn it on.
The police report indicates he exhibited signs of intoxication, says Crown attorney Herman Felderhof, which was confirmed by a breathalyser. Both readings, taken at 4:10 a.m. and 4:28 a.m., showed Hughes had a blood alcohol level that was more than double the legal limit, an aggravating factor which prompted Felderhof to request an elevated fine in New Glasgow Provincial Court on Monday.
Judge Theodore Tax ordered Hughes to pay a $1,380 fine within the next three months. He will also face a one-year driving prohibition.
