NEW GLASGOW – A New Glasgow man who is spending the next 200 days in jail for assaulting his girlfriend and her daughter has been granted permission to serve time concurrently for unpaid fines.

Colin Anthony Dean, 35, did not appear in New Glasgow Provincial Court Monday, but his lawyer, Doug Lloy, told the court that his client had approximately $5,000 in outstanding court fines.

Some of the fines date back to 1999, while the most recent was a $1,000 fine in 2007.

“He’s going to spend the next 200-odd days in jail, and he’s not in a good position to seek employment when he gets out,” Lloy told the court, adding that all of the fines Dean wishes to serve time for are able to be served concurrently with his current sentence.

If court fines remain unpaid, accused could find themselves serving jail time.

“He doesn’t have the present means and it’s highly unlikely he’ll have future means, so there’s no civil means of collection,” Judge Theodore Tax said as he granted the request.
