NEW GLASGOW – A 21-year-old man was taken into custody early Thursday morning and charged with break and enter, following a smash and grab at a New Glasgow liquor store.

Const. Ken MacDonald of the New Glasgow Police Services said, as of press time, police were still looking for another individual involved in a break-in at the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation’s Aberdeen Business Centre location.

The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Surveillance footage captured one individual entering the NSLC through one of the large storefront windows.

Police caught one man near the store. A second man, who may have been involved, is described as ‘young, with short dark hair and with a height of approximately 5’7”to 5’10”.

NSLC spokesman, Rick Perkins, said less than $1,000 in wine and spirits were taken from the store.

“The biggest damage we had was the window being broken,” he said.

At the store Thursday morning a large concrete slab, presumably used in part to break the window, was sitting atop one of the cashier’s countertops.

And despite the revelry typically associated with St. Patrick’s Day, Perkins said break-ins at NSLC locations are relatively frequent.

“We get break-ins or attempted break-ins somewhere in our network, on average, once a week,” he said. Most of the time, the break-ins occur after hours where, as it was in this case, someone smashes a window and grabs what they can. Robberies do occur during business hours at NSLC locations, Perkins said, but not very often.

“It’s always an interesting thing to me that people will go to the extent to do damage and smash into the store to steal small amounts of product. It’s an amazing phenomenon,” he said. “One would think that stealing a couple hundred dollars worth of booze isn’t worth whatever that does to your life.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the New Glasgow Police 1-800-222-8477.
