NEW GLASGOW – The racers were there, the pits were busy, the fans came out in droves.
NASCAR has nothing on the annual Pictou County Pets Critter Derby on Thursday at the Highland Square Mall. The event draws large crowds and the racing is intense.
It's the sixth year for the derby said Bonnie Thomas, owner of Pictou County Pets.
"These kids are from the other side of Truro down to Guysborough."
Thomas said all the money collected from donations goes to the Shriners' Children's Hospital Fund to help with travel costs. There were Shriners' clowns on hand for entertainment.
Pictou County Pets sponsors the event, Thomas added.
"We're supplying the racers, some bring their own and some not."
The derby has changed a bit from its inception.
"It's something we've wanted to do. It's evolved over the years, we've had truck pulls, but hamster's can pull very much… Now we have a time limit. We have hamster bowling, it's not like it sounds, the hamsters do the bowling."
