TRENTON – “I got one!”
Cheers and squeals filled the air at Trenton Park Saturday morning as hundreds of kids turned out to hone their fishing skills at the 12th annual Children’s Fisherama held by the Pictou County Rivers Association. The event gave kids between the ages of four and 15 the chance to fish for free and learn about the sport.
“It’s a lot of fun when you catch a fish and real it in, it feels really good,” said eight-year-old Quintin Ormrod of Pictou, who caught several big fish Saturday morning.
His favourite catch is trout and mackrel, but he’ll take any kind of fish, he says.
“I think more kids should fish because then they can catch what they eat.”
It’s not hard to do, added eight-year-old Tyler Greenwood of Pictou, who caught three fish.
“You have to cast out far, and you wait until something bites,” he explained. “You can tell that a fish has bit when the bob goes under. Then you’ve got to reel it in and put it on a stick.”
Bradley Gammell wasn’t quite so lucky Saturday – the nine-year-old hadn’t caught anything yet, but he was still having a great time.
“It’s exciting – that’s the best part,” Gammell said. “That, and eating them.”
He thinks it’s great that the Rivers Association holds events like this.
“I think kids should go out and fish more, because it’s good to get out and get some fresh air and stop making a mess in the house,” he added.
