NEW GLASGOW – Lynn Arsenault smiled brightly as she watched her 10-year-old son laugh and play with other kids Saturday afternoon.
It’s an ordinary sight for parents. But for Lynn, it means the world to see her child active and happy.
Daniel has muscular dystrophy, and Saturday was the sixth annual Walk for Muscular Dystrophy, organized by the Sunrise Trail Chapter of the MD support group. More than 150 participants attended the walk, including over 30 firefighters and a dozen fire engines.
“It truly warms my heart to see the increase in awareness about muscular dystrophy and the moral support of all these people behind us,” Lynn said. “Daniel enjoys this so much. He looks at it like it’s a family fun day, where all his friends get together and help raise money for him.”
The walk has grown significantly over the past few years, she said, and this year featured a silent auction, a kid’s zone with activities for all ages and a BBQ.
The increased support means the world to Daniel’s father, Kenny Arsenault, as well.
“Seeing all these people means that Pictou County people and the firefighters come out and show people in need how much they support them,” he said.
“Words can’t express what seeing all these people here means to me. The walk seems to get bigger all the time, more people seem to come all the time. The Sunrise Trail Chapter is really appreciative of all this support and really thanks all the volunteers and firefighters who showed up. They’re what makes this happen.”
The group managed to raise a significant amount and all of the funds raised in the county remain in Pictou County to help local people with neuromuscular disorders purchase necessary items like leg splints.
