NEW GLASGOW – A pilot episode for a new reality TV show will be filming in New Glasgow in the coming months.

Home in a Week is a new reality show that will test the skills of carpenters, bricklayers, drywallers, roofers and labourers. Producer Del Arnold says the first three pilot episodes will see teams of trades people build three homes – two in Sackville and one in New Glasgow – in just a week.

“They’ll build a 4,500-square-foot house in a week, working around the clock,” Arnold explained. “These are going to be quite the homes – three bedrooms, library, dining room, kitchen, entertainment room, living room.”

It’s hoped that the New Glasgow home will be built in the new subdivision off Abercrombie Road, he added.

“Home improvement shows are a huge rage right now, they’re cheap to produce and it’s a good return on your money,” he said. “We’ll run two crews, one day and one night, and it will pretty much run 24/7. The people on the show will vote off the crew members every two days until we’re down to four.”

Once the construction of the homes is done and filming is complete for the three projects, Arnold said, he plans to shop the show around to DYI TV and HDTV. He’s hoping a 20-episode season will be picked up in time for the 2012 lineup.

Before all that can happen, though, he needs crews that will construct these homes. He’s currently accepting applications for workers from across the province to participate in the event. They should be able to work as a team during one of the two 10-hour shifts, bring their own tools, be able to read and interpret blueprints, and have transportation to the work sites. Five years of experience in building in the residential centre would also be an asset, he added.

Not only would participating in the show be a great way to show off their construction skills, Arnold said, workers will be paid $30-40 per hour and will be able to gain exposure by posting signs and wearing their company logos on their shirts.

The show is also looking for a project manager, he said.
