NEW GLASGOW – So why is school starting on a Friday before a long weekend?
Well, according to the Department of Education, schools across the province are slated to run from Sept. 1 to June 30.
Some schools in the Halifax region are starting with classes today while others like Pictou County are opening their doors to students tomorrow.
Chrissy Matheson, communications spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said teachers were officially back to work Wednesday and some school boards chose to take a professional and administration day today which means students return to Pictou County classrooms bright and early tomorrow morning.
No more than eight professional and administration days are granted throughout the school year.
Terri Mingo, spokeswoman for the Chignecto Central Regional School Board, said professional and administration days allow staff to collaborate with each other and prepare for issues that may arise in the school year.
She said some people are upset the schools are opening on Friday before a long weekend because of planned family vacations. However, she said, the government calendar dictates when the schools open and close for the year and each school must meet the required number of days of teaching.
