TRENTON – Main Street, Trenton, will become a toll road for five hours Friday.
Volunteers and police will set up tolls between 3 and 8 p.m. tomorrow to raise money for the Trenton Home and School Association. The toll will involve a police car parked in the middle of Main Street near the kiosks and volunteers on either side with buckets asking for donations.
“This is the first time something like this has ever been done in the town, “ said Walter Smith of the Trenton Police. “From a police perspective, we believe this can be done safely. The police will be playing an active role.”
Darlene Anderson, president of Trenton’s Home and School, said the association hosts fundraisers throughout the year, but this is new idea they hope will generate new cash.
The association helps support school activities such as funding trips, events and programs. The hours of the toll road will be during the town’s busiest traffic flow.
Trenton Mayor Glen MacKinnon was the first person to put his money in the bucket during a promo shoot yesterday. He said council supports the home and school’s fundraiser and wishes them good luck on Friday.
“The home and school association provides a strong support structure to the school,” he said.
