FITZPATRICK MOUNTAIN – Three environmentally focused groups are banding together for a joint annual general meeting.

The Atlantic Chapter of the Sierra Club of Canada along with the Pictou County Watershed Coalition and the Nova Scotia Environmental Network (NSEN) will get together Sept. 10 to 12 at Stonehame Chalets.

A press release from the watershed coalition said the groups are holding their meeting there to bring attention to environmental issues in the county, including Boat Harbour, the Trenton generating station and the Friends of Redtail project.

The meetings – concerning water, energy and forestry – are open to all participants.

Highlights of the weekend include speakers discussing various issues, including Boat Harbour on Friday evening.

Saturday is a full day of activities including a 'Toxic Tour of Boat Harbour and Trenton Power' followed by a barbecue at Pictou Landing First Nations. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Daniel Paul author of 'We Were Not the Savages.' He will speak on the history and struggle of Boat Harbour and the Pictou Landing First Nations. Also included among the day's many events is a panel discussion on sustainable forestry.

Everyone is welcome to attend and reduced advanced registration fee is offered. Assistance is available for anyone who would like to attend.

More details can be found at the NSEN website.

During these discussions , I would like to see areas of the effects that the Strip Mine in Stellarton on the agenda. I feel this is an Environment impact on residents that is not being taken seriously . I have lived here for the duration of the strip mining project, and the effects on property, health and air quality is not to be taken lightly. Why in the agenda is there no discussion on this, have people forgotten about black lung that coal miners have suffered with for years, and will this be the fate of our children who are now breathing in the dust and dirt that comes from the mining operation in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Do you not see the winds of the winter coming and blowing the dirt and dust over the G.R.Saunders school over the past years, and again this year. Who will protect the ones who have no voice, this should be spoken about in these meetings that are to be held on the Sept 10 and 11. If you are to speak on Environment impacts in this area, then do not exclude ones that are here and can be seen by all those who live and breath in Pictou County...
