All eyes are on the shipyard in Pictou, but it’s not necessarily the work being done there. Instead it is a monstrous crane owned by A.W.Leil Cranes that is pulling out the decommissioned HMCS Terra Nova that sank while it was tied up at the Aecon Fabco shipyard that has caught the eye of Pictonians.  Larry MacDonald, general manager of A.W.Leil Cranes, said one section of the Terra Nova was brought up last week but the high winds were wreaking havoc on the company’s efforts Monday.

Crane Facts:

Demag CC 2800 crawler crane

Capacity of lifiting 660 ton

The crane itself weighs 300 ton

At this moment it is the largest crawler crane east of Montreal

The Demag CC 2800 recently finished installing windmills with Glen Dhu and was configured into a heavy lift crane for the job at the shipyard.

It took between 18 and 22 truckloads to bring the crane into shipyard. It took a week to assemble it.
