UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 6:08 p.m.

The shooting death of a man Wednesday night in Trenton has left area residents shaken.

Tiffany MacDonald’s father lives next door to the house on Mechanic Street where the murder occurred. He was working backshift that night and MacDonald was on her way to his house to pick up their dog right around the time the shooting occurred.

“I was at my boyfriend’s place down the road when I heard the gunshots,” she said. “I was on my way here, but the cops blocked us.”

The situation has left her frightened, she admits.

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s communication’s manager, Carolyn Pierce, said that’s part of the usual procedures when there is an outside threat in the area of a school, which also involves teachers and staff remaining extra aware of what’s going on.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2:18 p.m.

RCMP spokeswoman Brigdit Leger says police are urging anyone who believes they may have seen someone fleeing the Mechanic Street area after last night's shooting to get in contact with them.

No matter how irrelevant the information may seem, she says it could be of use.

"That may be that once piece of information that will lead us to the person or persons responsible for this homicide," she said.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 12:12 p.m. -

TRENTON – Police are now saying they are not ruling out a connection between the Trenton homicide Tuesday night and the case of missing Pictou County teen Amber Kirwan.

Const. Ken MacDonald had originally indicated there was no connection between the two cases, but now says that it’s too early to rule that out.

“We’re only in the preliminary stages of our investigation at this time and we’re still reviewing all evidence at this point,” MacDonald said.

Kirwan has not been seen since Oct. 9.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 11:55 a.m. -

TRENTON – Police are confirming that Mechanic Street is back open to traffic.

Checkpoints at entry points into the town have also been removed, said Const. Ken MacDonald says, but adds that there have been no arrests in the case.

“Investigators have been through the scene, they’ve processed the scene, so we’ve opened it back up,” said MacDonald. “But there haven’t been any new developments, we haven’t arrested anyone.”

The checkpoints went into place shortly after the murder occurred at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 11:05 a.m. -

TRENTON - New Glasgow Police and Royal Canadian Mounted Police are looking to speak with anyone who observed a suspect fleeing the Mechanic Street area following a shooting of a 44-year-old Trenton man last evening.

The shooting occurred around 8 p.m.

Checkpoints are set-up on all approaches into Trenton which include Main Street, Park Road, and Trenton Road. Mechanic Street is closed to traffic as police investigators search for evidence related to the shooting.

The name of the deceased is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later today in Halifax.

The investigation continues with the New Glasgow Police, RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime, and Pictou County District.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact to contact New Glasgow Police, RCMP or Crime Stoppers anonymously anytime at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimestoppers.ns.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 10:55 a.m. -

TRENTON – Police say they were alerted to a murder in Trenton last night after someone in the neighbourhood called 911 after they heard shots being fired.

The murder victim was a man. No details have been released pending notification of family members.

Police officers from across the county were called to help in the wake of the shooting.

Anyone who has noticed any suspicious activity in the town or other areas of the county are asked to contact police or Crimestoppers immediately.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 10:15 a.m. -

TRENTON– Const. Ken MacDonald says that a murder that occurred in Trenton Tuesday night has no connection to the case of missing Pictou County teen Amber Kirwan, who has not been seen since Oct. 9.

Because of the manpower required for the Kirwan investigation, however, New Glasgow Police have turned over the reins on the lead to the Trenton murder investigation to the RCMP’s Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit.

“It’s an integrated effort, very similar to the Amber Kirwan investigation – the RCMP will be the primary investigators on this one and we’ll assist,” said MacDonald. “The decision is just one of resource allocation.”

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 9:45 a.m. -

TRENTON – Police are not saying yet whether there have been any arrests in relation to a murder on Mechanic Street Wednesday night.

Const. Ken MacDonald did say that checkpoints have been established at all entrances into or out of Trenton, which have been in place since shortly after the shooting death occurred at 8 p.m. Tuesday night.

He refused, however, to say what police were looking for at the checkpoints.

UPDATE: Wednesday, Oct. 26, 9:15 a.m. -

Trenton schools under lockdown in wake of shooting

TRENTON – The elementary and middle schools in Trenton are keeping their doors locked today in the wake of a murder in the town last night.

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board’s communication’s manager, Carolyn Pierce, said that’s part of the usually procedures when there is an outside threat in the area of a school, which also involves teachers and staff remaining extra aware of what’s going on.

“We’re monitoring the situation and it may change as the day progresses,” said Pierce. “That could possibly include keeping the students inside during lunch and recess.”

A murder occurred in the town shortly after 8 p.m. last night. On Wednesday morning, police were still checking every vehicle that entered or exited the town, with checkpoints set up at every entrance to Trenton.

---

TRENTON – Police are confirming this morning that they are investigating a murder that occurred around 8 p.m. Tuesday night on Mechanic Street in Trenton.

Police were called to the murder scene after receiving a 911 call about shots fired in the area.

Little is known about the investigation yet, but the New Glasgow Major Crime Unit has called in assistance from the RCMP Northeast Nova Major Crime Unit, Pictou County District RCMP, the RCMP Forensic Unit and Stellarton Police.

Anyone who has information in the case is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.

TRENTON – One man is  dead after a shooting on Mechanic Street in Trenton Tuesday night.

New Glasgow Police Constable Ken MacDonald has confirmed that officers are investigation a possible homicide in the Mechanic Street area with the assistance of RCMP, New Glasgow Police Major Crime Unit and New Glasgow Police Forensic Unit.

Anyone with information is asked to call the New Glasgow Police or Crime Stoppers.

Police blocked off streets surrounding the area and were not allowing vehicles within the perimeter to leave. One officer could be seen with gun in hand at the bottom of Mechanic Street. Dogs were brought in to help search.

A resident of Mechanic Street who lives just up from where the shooting occurred said he was working in his garage when he heard two loud bangs.

“I hunt and I know it was a gunshot for sure. It was so loud. It was no Halloween prank.”

He said that he heard from other neighbours that the victim was a man and that he died.

Online reports were circulating that police were looking for a person wearing a dark hoodie who left the scene and was believed to be armed.

Various people expressed disbelief and concern about the safety of the community via Facebook as the word spread about the shooting, particularly on the heels of Amber Kirwan's disappearance more than two weeks ago.

Thank you Mary Stewart for your comment . My heart goes out to the families.I know exactly how they feel and hope that the police will find Amber safe . and they catch the low life that killed this young father and bring some kind of closure to the family , in which I myself never got .I still miss my big brother and think of him all the time and hopes that some day that the police will get new evidence and bring down the low life cowards scums that took him from us. God bless the Family of the murdered man .My heart goes out to you and the children. I am so sad !!

To listen to how outraged the community is at this shooting is wonderful. This family has been devistated in ways nobody can imagine if you've not been through the same thing. Fingers crossed that the coward is found sooner rather than later. It takes a coldhearted coward to shoot a man in front of his home with his wife and children inside. Justice is needed for those beautiful little babies......

Having lived here in Pictou County for a great many years I do know that these things have happened before. The only difference is that they don't usually happen one on top of another. Praying for the families of this horrible tragedy, for the safe return of Amber Kirwan and for evidence to help the local police & RCMP solve these terrible crimes.

So sad all these tragedies .. and worse than ever this tendency for people to turn a blind eye, ignore, not get involved. We NEED to get Involved, be nosey, keep an eye on each other. I'm not talking the nasty gossip nosey stuff, but I am talking about just watching out for each other, paying attention and calling the police when we see, hear or believe there is something wrong. We Need to Reconnect with each other. My heart goes to Amber and her family.

Look at the leaders in that area. I know none of you like to think there is a connection to that but the majority of the population is being screwed over by leaders that are not applied, have little empathy, and don't understand the real problems going on in families and their lives. That's truth peop's.

It's not the place it's the people. Most likely the involved persons are known to the victim(s). No need to panic - just hope that the police find them.

Not to downplay the seriousness of all this or anything, this is a huge tragedy especially on the heels of Amber missing.....but part of the reason these events are such a big, traumatic deal for the county, is the fact that relatively speaking, Pictou County is a safe place to live and we are a closer knit community. These events have definitely been a wake up call that this sort of thing can happen anywhere, however I do take comfort in the realization that these are isolated events, and are not reflective of what life is typically like in PC. Maybe be thankful you aren't raising your kids in a place where the public is so used to crime, that they are desensitized to this sort of activity. Good luck on the investigations, hoping the families of these victims get some closure.

Why are people blaming 'pictou county' it is the man who shot him that is to blame, not the county. If you blame the county, then blame the world, because it happens everyday, everywhere, and things like this have happened before in pictou county, are you all forgetting? It is a TRAGEDY! no matter where it happened!!

Give your heads a shake, people. Pictou County is a great place to live and as safe as any other place. Every community, no matter how small or bucolic, will eventually have something tragic happen. The murder and the missing girl are most likely just an unfortunate coincidence, and the rising number of people -- in Pictou County and elsewhere -- charged with possessing child porn say much more about modern enforcement tools than it does about declining morals. If you start moving every time there's a violent crime in your geographic area, you had best be prepared to keep a suitcase packed for the rest of your life.

I certainly hope they catch the culprit. It's starting to be like a city around here; instead of a quiet, peaceful town.

What in the world is going on in our community?!? I am currently pregnant and there is NO WAY I feel safe raising my kids here. Pictou County used to be such a nice place to live,Now I am having second thoughts about it. I know these things happen all over the world, but in such a small place like Pictou County its beyond words to express how scary it is :(
