NEW GLASGOW – Students at New Glasgow Junior High School learned about new activities Friday that benefit the body, mind and spirit.
The school’s annual Student Conference Day, Commit to Fit, featured a series of workshops and presentations centred upon achieving a healthy mind and body, presented by a large number of community members.
Some of the activities included yoga and zumba while presentations were given by various organizations on topics such as peer pressure, personal safety, Ironman competitions and mental health issues.
The day started with a pancake breakfast for the students and staff and then the students attended three sessions of their choice.
School principal Nancy Doyle said the school does a student conference each year and it was decided to focus this year’s theme around having a healthy mind, body and spirit.
She said having a healthy mind and body is invaluable to the education and learning process. This year’s conference was designed to connect education to areas which are associated with leading a healthy lifestyle and how a healthy lifestyle can lead to greater opportunities for students.
From these connections, students not only learn about physical and mental fitness, but they learn about how this can impact themselves, their families and other members in their communities.
