PLEASE NOTE: The YMCA New Year’s Run scheduled for tomorrow morning, Dec. 30 has been CANCELLED due to the impending storm.
NEW GLASGOW – If one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2013 is to live a healthy, active lifestyle, you can get started a couple of days early.
The Pictou County YMCA and the Johnny Miles Running Event Weekend have once again teamed up with major sponsors, Tim Hortons and Wendy’s to put on the annual New Year’s 5km Resolution Fun Run.
The run will be held on Sunday at 9:30 a.m., starting at the YMCA at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
“The majority of people will resolve to be more active and healthy,” says Terry Curley, one of this year’s event organizers. “I can’t think of a better way to get things started on right foot (pun intended).”
The event used to be held on the evening of Dec. 31 but was changed because of street lighting issues surrounding the Wellness Centre and the limited sidewalks.
For Curley, the participant’s safety must be priority.
“As much as we would have liked to have kept it on New Year’s Eve we just didn’t feel it was safe for the participants.”
The run will start with a toast to the New Year before leaving the Centre. The route will be the same route as it was for the Run for Juvenile Diabetes on Dec. 9.
“We received great feedback from the run in December,” says Curley. “It’s a chance to get on the new track and the route allows you to pass the other runners and not feel like a lone runner.”
Participants will leave the Wellness Centre and head up MacGregor Avenue, take a right on Auburn and from there they will make their way to the Pioneer Coal Athletic Field.
Participants return to the Wellness Centre for a hot and cold lunch as well as draw prizes.
Though there is no registration fee, participants are encouraged to make a $10 donation to the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. Any donations, of course, would be greatly appreciated.
Runners, walkers and participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. “We encourage everyone to come out and run, walk or whatever to get out and get active.”
Next year, he hopes that a location will be found to have the run on New Year’s Eve once more.
