PARRSBORO – The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board will recognize the actions of 16-year-old Brady Dunham and several other Parrsboro Regional High School students during a ceremony at the school on Thursday.
School board officials will be joined by Parrsboro Mayor Lois Smith, the Parrsboro fire department, EMT Nova Scotia and others at the ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m.
The ceremony was originally scheduled for late December but was cancelled by inclement weather.
Dunham was labeled a hero by many in his hometown for steering his school bus to safety after the bus driver fell ill on the way to school on Dec. 13.
He had barely stepped on the bus in Cross Roads that morning when things started to go wrong. The bus started drifting across the centerline and then left the road and went through a small ditch. Dunham, who was sitting near the back of the bus, ran to the front and took control of the bus and steered it away from the Glooscap Restaurant. Dunham kicked the driver’s feet from the gas and the brake and after crashing through a fence the bus came to rest on a neighbouring property.
The driver, a 51-year-old woman, was examined by medical personnel and taken to hospital where she later died.
