NEW GLASGOW – The closing date for tenders for the design and construction of a new Primary-Grade 8 school has been extended again.

This extension, which moves the closing date to Jan. 21, is the latest amendment in the tender and procurement process for a new school in New Glasgow.

The Minister of Youth and Education Ramona Jennex says the extension is to allow for modifications to the original tender requested by the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board and the community.

“We’re taking into account an addition of three classrooms, I believe.”

She is certain the new school will still be ready for September 2014.

“It was one of the first questions I asked,” she said. “The architect and engineer assured me the school would open on time.”

An addendum to the original tender document on Jan. 7, 2013, notes that “The Tender closing date is changing from the 8 of January to the 21 of January 2013. Time and location to remain the same.”

This was the fourth time the tender closing date has been extended. Previous closing dates were Dec. 12 and Dec. 19.

Both the demolition of the existing school – New Glasgow Junior High – and construction of a new building are the conditions for bidders on this project.

The $18-million school will replace Temperance Street Elementary, Acadia Street Elementary, and New Glasgow Junior High School. Grade 9 students will attend North Nova High School once the Primary-Grade 8 school opens.
