LYONS BROOK – Construction and renovations are continuing at West Pictou Consolidated School with more upgrades on the way.

The latest improvements termed ‘Phase 3a’ have been the completion of the bus loop, paving of the parking lot and the upgrading of the creative technology facilities.

Debbie Buott-Matheson, communications manager for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board said the project, that started two years ago, is moving forward.

Phase 3b will see renovations to the office and administrative areas, while the library will mov upstairs.

The space left when the library moves will become a learning centre.

The school’s principal Cindy Turner is thrilled that the upgrades are continuing, noting the staff and students have adjusted to the drone of construction crews well.

“It’s great and everyone is excited for the good things on the way,” said Turner “I’m particularly excited by the new offices that will be more public friendly, encouraging people to come in.”

The upgrades that started two years ago included such items as a new boiler, gym floor, bathrooms and safer fire doors.

The project is part of a larger plan of upgrades across the province announced by the government in the ‘Jobs and Building Plan’ for 2013.

Of the $525 million set aside for more than 135 projects in the province, $3.9 million has been set aside for the West Pictou Consolidated School upgrades.

Buott-Matheson says about $1.7 million has already been spent on the upgrade of the past two years.
