PICTOU – A county councillor has gone to bat for the Pictou Lobster Carnival’s boat races committee.

Coun. Ed MacMaster said he has received a request from the Pictou Lobster Carnival asking that it donate $4,000 to this year’s boat races.

MacMaster said this would be a one-time donation that would help the carnival committee enhance the existing races.

“During the past two years, it has had private donations and managed to scrap together some prizes,” he said. “This will be done this year, but your dollars will enhance it.”

Finance services chairman Randy Palmer told MacMaster that any request for funding over $1,000 needs to be dealt with through community grants and the deadline for such submissions is Feb. 28.

He said the lobster boat races have always been a good draw for the carnival and attracting some modified boats to the show is an added bonus.

“At carnival, everything was packed,” he said in regard to the modified boats visit two years ago. “Some of them had to go back to New Glasgow to stay for the night. It seems to be a winning thing.”
