It appears St. Francis Xavier University is one step closer to a strike. Yesterday negotiations broke down once again.

“We cannot accept the broad disparities the administration is trying to impose on us that would compromise the academic mission of this institution by undermining job security for academic staff," Peter McInnis, president of the St. FX Association of University Teachers, said in a release. "We are simply seeking a fair and equitable deal.”

They will be in a legal strike position on Saturday and are prepared to start picketing on Monday, he said.

University President Dr. Sean Riley last night issued a release on the matter as well.

"It is with regret that I inform the campus community that talks between the University and the AUT have broken off," he wrote. "While progress was made on many issues, the AUT Executive’s demands remained well beyond the University’s financial capability."

I am always so disappointed when I hear about a school going on strike, especially a University. I agree that the teachers and professors should have the right to decent pays, however, when students have had to pay to attend classes, and at unbelievable costs, these teachers should be required to continue with their classes. As far as I am concerned, it completely unacceptable for them to strike... Correct me if I am wrong, but none of those students will see a refund for the time they missed that wasn't their fault... and why should the students suffer with missed work, and potentially more work packed into an already tight schedule... I realize that the Unions purposely pick times like these to try and make the University go along with their demands, but it is disgusting that they use the students as pawns... this is why I despise Unions... Far as I'm concerned, if these profs decide to strike, I think every student should receive a prorated refund based on how many days they miss, and I fully believe that the University AND the Union should be responsible for that cost with a 50/50 split
