NEW GLASGOW – MoneySense Magazine: you’ve got mail. About 200 postcards worth, said New Glasgow’s communications and marketing director, Kim Dickson.
The postcards, which feature a picturesque scene of Melmerby Beach, were created to respond to New Glasgow being named ‘Overall Worst City,’ placing last in MoneySense Magazine’s annual ranking of Canadian cities and towns with populations over 10,000.
“According to my rough estimate,” said Dickson, “people in Pictou County have sent about 200 postcards to MoneySense.”
She says the postcards featuring positive messages have been coming into the town hall by the handfuls since the campaign started a week ago.
“One postcard said, ‘Pictou County and New Glasgow are not only accepting of cultural diversity, but celebrate it.’”
The mayors of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Pictou, Westville and Trenton and Pictou County’s warden gathered to launch the campaign.
New Glasgow’s Deputy Mayor Henderson Paris said after two years at the bottom of the list, it was time to send a message – literally.
“It’s time we responded to this negative ranking,” he said. “It’s speaks to the quality of our people, that they want to prove we’re a great place to live.”
The county’s campaign hopes to set the record straight and defend Pictou County, raise morale among citizens and try to encourage MoneySense to compare this area on a more even playing field.
