Province adjusting to phasing out of penny

The province is taking steps to prepare for the phasing out of the penny on Feb. 4.

HALIFAX – Effective Feb. 4, the federal government is phasing out the penny. Nova Scotians using cash to pay for government fees will be effected by the change.

If pennies are not available, Access Nova Scotia centres and all other government offices, will round up or down as follows:

-- final amounts ending in .01 or .02 will be rounded down to .00

-- final amounts ending in .03 or .04 will be rounded up to .05

-- final amounts ending in .06 or .07 will be rounded down to .05

-- final amounts ending in .08 or .09 will be rounded up to .10

Rounding guidelines apply to cash transactions only. Electronic payments will continue to use exact amounts.

The penny will still be considered legal tender and will continue to be accepted for payment and offered as change, if available. Future changes to government fees and charges will end in five-cent increments.

Actually what needs to happen to make this work is to incorporate the tax into the price on the ticket not add it on at the till.. you know .. like how the rest of the world operates (exception US)!!!! I know.. I will hear "the stores merely collect the tax" .. they can still collect it.. I for one am sick and tired of having to add the tax of stuff in my head. I'd rather look at the item, see that it's 4.95 and pay that at the till. not 4.95 + 15% (5.69) so they'll get anther penny as they will round that up to 5.70. If the rest of the civilized world can do this, why can't Canada?

Why don't they just take away all change then we can just keep everything to dollars and no cents (sense).

  They're probably not going to take away all change because there are still things that cost less than a dollar. Which sounds like common cents (sense).
