The province's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) laid charges against a four-year member of the Halifax Regional Police on Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Const. Chris Mosher, 29, is charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious thing with intent to aggrieve. The charges stem from incidents on Nov. 2 and 3.

In early November, SIRT received a complaint from a female alleging that a male police officer sexually assaulted her. The two knew each other, and the incident is alleged to have occurred in the home of the accused. At that time, SIRT began the investigation that led to the charges.

Const. Mosher is due to appear in provincial court on Feb. 13. He was arrested in relation to the investigation on Dec. 11 and released on conditions.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independently launch an investigation, or begin one after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the Minister of Justice. It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.

A public report summarizing the results of the investigation must be filed within three months after it is finished.
