The preliminary inquiry for Christopher Falconer has begun today in Pictou.
Falconer, 30, is charged with murdering 19-year-old Amber Kirwan.
The preliminary inquiry is used by the judge to determine whether there is enough evidence to warrant bringing the case to a trial. A publication ban prevents any evidence from the case from being published in the media.
Falconer has pled not guilty to the charges.
