First Cup - Human rights activist killed in crash

8:41 a.m. A water commission which formed as a result of water quality concerns in Stellarton will meet today at 3 p.m. at the town hall.

8:23 a.m. Just heard that the victim in Friday's crash in James River was human rights activist Pat Skinner. The accident happened at 12:50 p.m. last Friday in James River near exit 30. Skinner's Volvo S60 collided into an Honda CRV that was travelling on Highway 104.  She died at the scene.

8 a.m. So the Pictou County Scotians wrapped up their regular season in second place in the Sid Rowe division. Read about it here. What an improvement over last year when they finished the regular season in last place with just 8 game points.

7:50 a.m. NSCC classes are also closed today.

7:45 a.m. The preliminary inquiry for Chris Falconer who is accused of murdering Amber Kirwan is continuing again this afternoon in Pictou. Cpl. Trevor Penny will be the witness resuming the stand. While we can't report the evidence presented, our reporter will be on scene to keep you up to date on who takes the stand and what the atmosphere is like. For info on last week click here.

7:32 a.m. While local students are happy to be getting the day off of school, in Antigonish there's a number glad to be getting back. After a three week strike by teachers, classes resume today. Read about it here.

7:20 a.m. As mentioned schools are closed today. Environment Canada has two weather warnings in effect right now. One for wind and one for blowing snow. Gusts up to 100 kilometres per hour are expected. They warn that strong westerly winds will give near-zero visibilities in blowing snow today. What's it like in your area? 7:08 a.m. Good morning Pictou County. With the snow that fell last night, the Chignecto Central Regional School Board has cancelled all classes today.
