PICTOU - County council wants its transportation committee to look a ways it can improve access to the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Coun. Jim Turple said he has heard complaints from residents who say they can't walk to the wellness centre because there are not any sidewalks in place along Westville Road, under an overpass.

It is a complaint that is heard in council chambers about once a month, but CAO Brian Cullen said there is little that can be done to put sidewalks in place under the overpass. However, he said, the committee should be looking at alternative ideas on how to deal with the issue.

Coun. Randy  Palmer said when the snow is cleared there is plenty of room for people to walk along the side of the road under the overpass, adding that many rural areas in the county don't have sidewalks.

"We don't have sidewalks in Thorburn and there is adequate walking in there," he said. "If we need to put a tunnel in there, we are talking millions of dollars."

Coun. Chester Dewar suggested at some lights under the overpass would make a difference while Coun. Leonard Fraser said a white line on the road or rumble strips would make people aware of the walking space.

"There are some things that could be done," he said.

As stated councils should be looking into the cost of going to the y for people, the attitude is well volunteer but IF you are there to improve some health issues then it is unlikely you are able to volunteer. Some of us will NEVER see anything But the pool in the y yet we must pay for using the whole place, and most of the time we are only there for 1 hour. Like most people I do not understand why a center created for wellness for everyone in the community with the y renting space in it doesn't reach out to include as many as possible by offering punch cards or whatever they can to help people become the best they can be.

Raise your concerns with the YMCA - the Wellness Centre has nothing to do with the YMCA admissions. And I agree - punch cards should be brought back. I too only want to use the pool and not everything else, but I'll be damned if I will pay $15 to swim.
