Council for the town of New Glasgow has approved three new street names: Horizon Street, Beck’s Hill, and Goodman Lane.
A section of Tremont Street affecting the civic addresses 303 and 305 will be renamed Horizon Street. The portion of Arch Street from Stellarton Road toward the East River will be renamed Beck’s Hill. The intersecting street to Military Lane remains Arch Street and the portion of the current Arch Street along the river will become Goodman Lane.
The town will notify Canada Post, the registry of deeds, emergency services, utility companies and others of this name change. Street name signage will also be replaced where needed to accommodate these changes.
The New Glasgow council sought public suggestions as well as from the residents of the affected streets and from the New Glasgow Heritage Committee. The new street names of Beck’s Hill and Goodman Lane have historical significance.
In the early 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, a portion of Arch Street was nicknamed Beck’s Hill due to the fact that JHC Beck shoveled the hill in the winter as there was no town snow removal program for that area, the name Goodman Lane was selected in reference to the overall contribution of the Goodman family entrepreneurs that impacted the growth and development of New Glasgow as a commercial service centre since the early 1900s.
In order to eliminate the risk of confusion or error during emergency response, name changes are required in the case of duplicate street names. Residents have been given the required six months notification and the name change will be effective as of July 22.
