PICTOU COUNTY – Local police say they’ve responded to multiple calls this week of snowmobilers travelling illegally.

Pictou County District RCMP stated in a press release that they have responded to snowmobiles traveling on public roadways and private property in the area of Brookville Road, McLellan's Brook Road and Kyle Lane and in some cases, private property has been damaged by the snowmobiles.

“RCMP are reminding off highway vehicle operators that it is a violation of the Off Highway Vehicles Act to operate a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on a public roadway or private property,” the statement said. “Violators could be fined $399.91 for a first offence and up to $974.71 for a third or subsequent offence.”

Police stated that if you have information regarding the identity of the persons operating off highway vehicles on public roads, you can contact any RCMP office, Municipal Police Department, or Crime Stoppers Anonymously anytime at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by their Secure Web Tips at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.

Atv, snowmobiles and side by side should be allowed to use rural roads. People pay big money for these vehicles and pay to license, insure and trail passes. I'm not saying start driving them on the transcanada but rural roads should not be a issue as long as they are abiding by the law and speed limit. The is a very fun pass time and can be very enjoyable. Riders should respect peoples property. If they want maybe the Atv and side by side and snowmobile should have blinkers and a horn already installed. Vote it in!!!

I can understand these laws applying to places like halifax and downtown new glasgow. BUt for you to start enforcing these laws in rural areas? I think the registry of motor vehicles is a dictatorship and needs to be revised. At any time the minister can take your license and not even give you a reason, Because they made a law that says so. I understand driving is a privilege, but when you have no public transit, snowy winters, and sidewalks that are usually last to be plowed, walking and biking are not an option in PIctou County if you have a job. Bicycles can be driven on the road but do not need insurance, a 4wheeler needs insurance/plate but cannot be driven on the road....DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! If the government cared about the environment, 4wheelers and dirtbikes would be legal for the road as long as they were inspected/insured. Use your head!
