RIVER JOHN - Any one interested in making a formal presentation at public meetings addressing the school review process will need to pre-register with the school board.

Debbie Buott-Matheson, communications manager for the Chignecto- Central Regional School Board, said the public will still have an opportunity to make comments during the meeting, but people should contact the school if they are interested in making more formal presentations.

“We are also asking that the formal presentations are kept to five minutes,” she said. “Once these presentations are complete, the facilitator will open up the comments to the floor. “

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is currently looking at five schools to determine if they should be closed based on a number of criteria including low attendance numbers.

The five schools on the chopping block include River John Consolidated, East Pictou Middle School, Bass River Elementary School, Maitland District Elementary and Wentworth Consolidated Elementary.

As part of the review process, the board will be hosting a series of public meetings this coming week to get feed back from the community.  In Pictou County, the East Pictou Middle School public hearing will take place Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at East Pictou Middle School in Sutherland’s River and the River John Consolidated public hearing will be held Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at River John Consolidated School.

Buott-Matheson said if people are uncomfortable speaking at the public meeting, they can send their comments to her at via email at buottmathesond@ccrsb.ca, fax at 902-897-8989 or mail to 60 Lorne Street, Truro, Nova Scotia B2N 3K3.
