The Stellarton Tim Horton’s is going to be getting an upgrade this year and owner Jim Shaw wants to see a double lane drive-thru system implemented, similar to the one used at the McDonald’s on East River Road.

Shaw made an application to the town of Stellarton to allow for the changes, which was presented to the town’s committee of the whole Monday night.

“We’re going to renovate it this year so it’s a good time for us to incorporate a new drive-thru design,” Shaw said.

Roland Burek, senior planner with Pictou County Shared Services, said he sees the proposal as a positive for the town because it’ll alleviate some of the congestion around the entrance.

Mayor Joe Gennoe and councilor Ken Francis voiced their support for the proposal.

“I would see this as something proactive and something that would be in the best interest of safety and traffic flow for those going to Tims, because there has been occasions when we’ve seen traffic on the streets waiting to go in,” Francis said. “Anything that can be done to expedited the drive-thru, I think would be in the best interest of everybody.”

The proposal will have to be approved by council for first and second reading before it’s formally accepted.

Shaw mentioned that this design is something they’ll consider for their other locations where space permits. The Stellarton Tim Horton’s was built in 1990.

I agree, long lines is no reason to block traffic. Common sense should tell you that if you can not pull in off the street then pull into the parking lot; and heaven forbid get out of your vehicle and walk to the counter. With that said, Tim's should staff the counter appropriately, any given Tim's will have 3 to 5 people working the drive through and 1 person working the counter regardless of how many people are waiting in line. I've been in line at the counter and the Wendy's/Tim's combo and watching people who pulled up to the drive through after I was standing there for 5 minutes get served before me. It was so blatantly obvious one day I actually asked the girl working there if it was Tim Horton's policy to serve the drive through customers first and she would not answer me.
