STELLARTON – It has been referred to as a ‘batting cage’ for hockey players, but with another major draw, being able to see where you rank throughout the world.
Greg Burrows, owner of Subway franchises throughout Pictou County, recently opened his new location with a few additions to the building including the hockey training system, Rapid Shot.
The system allows shooters to keep track of their scoring through the Internet, which gives them a breakdown of their shot speed, reaction time and hit rate. Shooters are also ranked worldwide based on their age or the level they play at.
“I think if ever you can change the ‘scenery’ for a kid or whatever way they’re training – everyone gets complacent and a lot of kids will shoot pucks in September, but it will fade off as it gets colder,” said Burrows. “This is a tool where you can come indoors, bring your buddies, have some fun and it’s like an arcade because you almost enjoy watching your buddies shoot as much as you shooting. You want to see how they’re doing and then how you’re doing.
“It doesn’t lie, either you hit the target or you don’t.”
Burrows said with the points system and break down of the speed, reaction time and target hit rate that it helps to show what aspect of a players shot that needs work. He said that not only helps them improve, but by having all the data available it gives them the drive to beat their past numbers.
According to Burrows a few years ago he was in contact with the owner of the Rapid Shot system and they were discussing potentially bringing one to Pictou County. At the time there was discussion about the Wellness Centre being built, which made Burrows hold off until there was more information. He said the feedback has been great since opening just over a week ago.
“Right now we’re just trying to get people in to see the facility and those that have been in think it’s great,” he said. “Having the Subway and Rapid Shot system in the location we’re in goes along with the theme of health and wellness in the area.”
Currently the location is open Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
