20 veterans were honoured in Pictou Sunday for their service to the country at the Northumberland Veterans Unit with the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh Diamond Jubilee honourary medals.

The Duke of Edinburgh awards are typically given to longserving volunteers, but with the fortieth anniversary of the awards being in Nova Scotia, a new initiative was put forward to honour those with long standing military service.

Local cadets helped with the medal presentation.

The awards were given to: Chuck Langille, Vaughn Blakney, Clem Guthro, John Fraser, Calvin Brown, John Campbell, Hector Stone, Donald Dulop, Harry MacDonald, Stanley Porter, Harold Hussey, David Coleman, Bert Sears, John Robson, Earl Noiles, Bob Nelson, Strand Jenkins, Bob Demone, Ron Cheverie and Harray Ranahan.
