NEW GLASGOW – The store replacing Zellers will not give preference to the 55 former employees when hiring starts. Giant Tiger Stores Limited, Canada’s largest chain of discount stores, said the hiring process would begin later this year.

“We will accept and review applications from every person who applies including, of course, former Zellers employees,” said Janie Aker, Manager, Public Relations and Community Activation, Giant Tiger Stores Limited.

When pressed about whether former Zellers employees would have a leg up, Aker stated, “Every application must be reviewed and considered equally.”

The store is scheduled to open on Nov. 16.

When pressed about whether former Zellers employees would have a leg up, Aker stated, “Every application must be reviewed and considered equally.”

I think you just answered your own question. They essentially said no, they would review everyone equally and not give any preference to former Zellers employees. The headline just words the said statement differently.

I agree with Sarah. They did indirectly say they would not give preferential consideration to former Zellers employees and in my opinion it is not their obligation to do so. Giant Tiger is a remarkably fair and conscientious employer and corporate citizen and their approach to hiring is to consider all people equally and equitably - bravo to them. But do consider that someone with 20 years at Zellers will have a much better Work Experience profile than a new hire with limited experience, so the former Zellers folks will still have an edge in the hiring process
