Premier Darrell Dexter today, March 15, announced the appointments of new ministerial assistants and changes in the assignments of others and one of Pictou County's MLAs is on the list.

Pictou East MLA Clarrie MacKinnon is now ministerial assistant for the Premier and Buy Local.

"Ministerial assistants are instrumental in helping to ensure that government policies and programs address the key priorities of government and make life better for Nova Scotia families," said Dexter. "The new roles will put more emphasis on creating good jobs and growing the local economy, and taking advantage of opportunities like shipbuilding, energy and forestry.

"I want to welcome the appointees to their new roles and thank them for accepting this important responsibility."

Ministerial assistants will represent ministers and government to build relationships with important groups, and work with departments on policy and program development.

Congratulations to Clarrie! I hope he can convince the Premier to stop funding foreign-owned pulp mills - Northern Pulp is owned by Indonesia's Sinar Mas, one of the worst polluters on the planet, and a company that owes billions to governments around the world - and start spending our tax dollars where they will actually do some good. NP has been sucking us dry for 45 years. Time for somebody else to have a turn. Give the workers at NP a golden handshake and close the place. Return Boat Harbour to Mother Nature and clean up this provincially owned cesspool.

Congratulations Clarrie and best wishes! I am glad to see you move up the ladder. When Nova Forge closed and I lost my job, I wrote to all three local MLA's as well as the Premier, Peter MacKay and even the Prime Minister. Clarrie was the only elected representative to even bother writing back - and I do not even live in his riding. I think Clarrie is a real gentleman and a true man of the people.

Maybe Claries first job will be to get rid of the impostor called food at the Vets unit and the local hospitals. Buying local is a joke right? I cannot imagine any local person producing a foul product such is being served at these establishments. Then he can move on to his next job which will be the overseeing of repaving of secondary roads in the county since he has proclaimed himself to be an expert on road building, I will await with high expatiations but realistically results going from his record so far.
