NEW GLASGOW – In May, downtown New Glasgow will transform into an arts hub with musicians, artists, writers and more showcasing their talents to the public for free. But the event, New Glasgow’s Art at Night, isn’t free to put on and organizers have launched a fundraising campaign to help offset the operational costs of the event.
Andy Cunningham said the crowd-funding campaign is accessible at www.kapipal.com/ngsartatnight and the several artists have donated rewards for different levels of donations.
“It’s money that will help us get things we need beforehand like posters, program guides all the lighting and sound equipment,” Cunningham said. “It is a free event, it brings people downtown and there’s over 80 artists who are coming out to show their work at a free event that, last year, we had over 1,000 people walking through, but it costs a lot of money to print all the brochures, print all the posters, rent the lights.”
The goal of the fundraising campaign is $2,000.
“There are different amounts that you can donate and you’ll get rewards. There are four different artists from the community that agreed to give us rewards. Layne Green is giving a demo of his CD, Josh MacKenzie is a photographer who is giving a print, Zack Kalbfleisch is going to make an Art at Night T-shirt for whoever donates a certain amount and Dawn DeCoff will donate a sketch of whatever picture you send in,” he said. “Depending on how much you give you get a different reward and it’s all outlined on the campaign website.
Art at Night will take place on May 4 from 8 p.m. to midnight in downtown New Glasgow. It will feature more than 80 local artists and their work in store windows, parking lots, parks, churches, libraries and more.
“Last year we had three venues and this year we’re at around 20 right now, all downtown. A lot of those are parks and parking lots, store fronts. Some stores aren’t opening, but they’ll have art in their windows for people to view,” Cunningham said. “Other places like the library and Celtic Circle and Glasgow Square will be open and a couple others as well. From three to 20 venues, that’s almost seven times as many locations as last time.”
Cunningham said the event will have scheduled performances such as musical acts and poetry readings announced closer to the date on its website (artatnight.ca).
