Public invited to woodland conference Saturday

On Saturday the public is invited to participate in a woodland conference at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton.

Those interested in learning about future woodland management and protection, along with other related topics, can pre-register to win an iPod and enjoy several expert speakers during the day-long event.

The topics and speakers include: Woodland owner perspective and experiences – Elmer MacKay; Legal issues landowners should know about – Ian MacLean of MacLean and MacDonald Law; Protecting Wilderness Areas in Nova Scotia – Helen Smith of DNR; Update on Port Hawkesbury Paper – Paul MacDonald of PHP; Efficiency Nova Scotia programs available for landowners – Erika Wicks of ENS; Update on Timber Markets – Andrew West of HC Haynes; Moose habitat and forestry – Shavonne Meyer of DNR; Nova Scotia Forest Strategy update – Jonathan Kierstead of DNR;  New provincial private woodland management program – Allan Eddy of DNR; Third party private woodland management opportunities – Dave Sutherland of the Association for Sustainable Forestry.

There will be time set aside for question and answer sessions. In addition to receiving information on a variety of topics, participants will be given the opportunity to give policy and program questions and suggestions that will be forwarded to senior officials in provincial government for future consideration.

Several exhibitors will be set up to provide information, services and materials to interested participants.

As well, one of the conference participants will win a new professional level Stihl MS261 power saw as a result of winning the grand prize draw. There will also be several door prize draws open to all.

Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for students. This includes lunch and a snack break. The conference begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 3:30 p.m.
