A 49-year-old Pictou County man is facing charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act after police responded to his residence to investigate a domestic assault complaint and discovered a grow operation.

On Monday at 10:15 a.m. RCMP were called to a home in Hazel Glen, just outside Westville, to investigate a domestic assault complaint. During the course of the investigation, members were alerted to a marijuana grow-op in the basement of the home.

A search warrant was executed at the home later in the afternoon with assistance from the Pictou County Street Crime Enforcement Unit. The search resulted in the seizure of 40 marijuana plants, hydroponic grow equipment, harvested marijuana and a small quantity of cannabis resin and oil.

The man is facing charges of assault, production of marijuana, possession for the purpose of trafficking and possession of cannabis resin under one gram and will appear in court on Monday.

RCMP Cpl. Shawn Reynolds said the grow operation was fairly sophisticated with lights and a watering system that allowed for a certain pH level to be maintained for the plants, which made the discovery significant.

“It’s not like a teenager growing 10 plants,” he said.
