WESTVILLE – A trial for a 39-year-old Westville man accused of sexually assaulting a youth started Tuesday in Pictou.
The 15-year-old girl testified during the opening hours of the trial that is expected to continue Thursday. The man, who cannot be named under a court-ordered publication ban, is accused of sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference involving alleged incidents that occurred between the summer of 2011 and April 2012.
The trial opened with a police statement given by the victim who said she had sex with the accused on numerous occasions. She told police that it started with kissing and progressed to intercourse. She was 13-years-old when the incidents allegedly occurred.
Following the admission of the police interview into evidence, the victim was on stand for most of the day under cross-examination by lawyer Rob Sutherland.
The accused is representing himself in the trial, but Sutherland’s service were required to cross-examine the alleged victim.
The trial resumes Thursday in Pictou provincial court.
