Sumac Farms is hosting the largest horse reining competition in the Maritimes on Saturday starting at 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 7480 Pictou Landing Rd, Chance Harbour.
Over 70 horses will be hauling in to Chance Harbour, with riders from all over the Atlantic Provinces including Newfoundland will compete.
A new class the ‚ÄúUltimate Reiner‚ÄĚ has been added to encourage new people to the sport, $2,500 in prize money is on offer.
Some local young competitors are excited to be taking part, Brittany Lodge (16) New Glasgow, Jamie MacCallum (16) Green Hill, Ashton (12) and Reid (14) Sutherland, Westville , Hannah MacQuarrie (16) New Glasgow, Also new to reining Kara Bonvie who works at Sumac but has never shown a reining horse.
The judge is Francois Gauthier known as a ‚ÄôMaster‚Äô of reining, is originally from St. Hyacinth, QC but has owned and managed his very successful breeding and training facility in Lucama, North Carolina for past decades. Francois amongst many of his prestigious accolades was a medal winning Canadian team member of The World Equestrian Games in 2006.
The show will consist of riders following a pattern which shows off the horses athletic ability with exciting slide stops and fast spins. Competitors love to be cheered on.
All are welcome, admission is by donations at the gate to the local fire dept.
