Mayor Barrie MacMillan announced this week on behalf of the Town, the Municipality of the County of Pictou and the local bid committee that Pictou County has officially been awarded the bid for the 2015 Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games by the Nova Scotia 55 Plus Society. The bid was unanimously approved by the society.
The local bid committee consists of representatives of the Town of New Glasgow, the County of Pictou, the New Glasgow 55 Plus Club, Active Pictou County and Destination Eastern and Northumberland Shores (DEANS).
“The bid process was a very comprehensive one and feedback from the Society noted a sincere desire by our region to support our seasoned residents," MacMillan stated in a release. "The Town of New Glasgow and the County of Pictou are both pleased to invest human and financial resources into the organization of strong and successful games in 2015."
The county and town have active seniors clubs and are jointly participating in the Age Friendly Action Plan with the provincial Department of Seniors. Age friendly communities promote active aging by optimizing opportunities for health, participation, security, housing and transportation in order to enhance quality of life as people age.
The Nova Scotia 55 Plus Games will be held throughout Pictou County at various recreational facilities and assets throughout the communities of the region, including the Pictou County Wellness Centre.
