NEW GLASGOW – The Women Alike Breast Cancer Support Group will be holding an open house Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Glasgow Square.
The support group is a non-profit organization that offers its services to survivors of breast cancer. It hosts meetings the second Monday of each month at Glen Haven Manor at 7 p.m. that include guest speakers and supply survivors and their families the latest medical updates.
Women Alike is also looking for survivors to be part of its dragon boat team that meets regularly for both recreational and competitive events.
Shirley Manos, chair of the support group, said the open house is a way for people to learn more about its services.
“Things have changed a bit over the years, “ she said. “ We volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society and we don’t get a chance to see everyone who had breast surgery because a lot of these surgeries are now one-day surgeries.”
In the past, she said, patients would be in the hospital for as long as three days, but now if they are released in a shorter period of time, it is more difficult for volunteers to make the connection. “A lot of people aren’t aware that we are there for them,” she said.
In addition to the open house, Women Alike will also be hosting a breast cancer survivor camp at the Tim Hortons Camp in Tatamagouche from Sept. 13 to 15.
The camp is open to people from across the Maritimes. The weekend will include entertainment, information sessions and activities for everyone. The event is sponsored by the Women Alike Breast Cancer Support Group and the Atlantic Chapter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
