TRENTON - There was a lot to bark about in Trenton Saturday.

Dogs of all breeds and sizes showed up with their owners for a day of socializing and fundraising at the fourth annual Nova Scotia SPCA Bark in the Park. The event raised $4,200 for the SPCA Pictou Branch.

“We had over 200 people show up, so it was a great day,” said SPCA Pictou Branch manager Agnes Leavitt.

The SPCA has been holding the day of doggie fun for four years, but this is the first time Trenton hosted one.

Dog-owners and their furry friends participated in a two-kilometre dog jog, a fluffy fashion show, a talent competition and an agility demonstration.

The fun wasn’t just for the dogs. Humans were treated to live entertainment, a BBQ and a bouncy castle for the kids.

Dr. Grace’s Braces Barkin’ Beauties went home winners from the dog jog after they raised the most amount of funds at $2,500.

“It’s always been a really important charity for me personally,” Dr. Grace Richardson said about why her and staff at her orthodontist business participated.

Eight employees and four of their spouses made up the team. They each campaigned to their friends and family for donations.

Rio and Pebbles also ran the dog jog and were happy to get to spend time with other pups.

“[We brought her here] to get her to interact with some other dogs. She’s a homebody,” said Pebbles’ human, Sheila MacNeil.

Rio is a one-year-old Boxer-Pitbull, but her owner Rhonda Pyche said the breed shouldn’t scare people away.

In fact, Pebbles, a one-year-old Chihuahua the size of Rio’s leg, is the threatening one in the family.

“Pebbles is the bully,” Pyche said, adding that Pebbles tries to bite Rio quite often.

It’s just family rivalry though as the dogs have been spending time together since the sisters got them.

Similar events were held all over the province Saturday and Sunday.
