The United Way kicked off their fundraising campaign Friday morning with a breakfast hosted by Maritimes and Northeast Pipeline.
This year’s theme is “I give because I live here”, asking people to think about and to share their reasons for giving locally.
“One of the great things about the United Way of Pictou County is that all the funds raised here, stay here,” says Anne Marie Colbert, United Way Board President. “Not only do we keep the funds we raise in Pictou County, we also ask community members to decide the best way to utilize those funds.”
Returning to lead the campaign will be Jim Fitt, CEO of Velsoft and joining him as co-chair is James Lundrigan, commercial account manager with RBC. Former Town of New Glasgow mayor, Ann MacLean also joins the campaign team as chair of the Leaders of the Way, a campaign for individuals who donate $500 or more.
“We truly feel so honoured to have such amazing volunteers to run our campaign,” says United Way executive director, Jessica Smith. “Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to raise the funds needed to support our community. Even though we didn’t reach our goal last year, we were still able to fund 12 non-profit organizations. And as a result of the 2012 funding, we know that over 12,000 people in Pictou County received a helping hand from the agencies we support.”
Last year’s campaign came $12,000 shy of meeting their $300,000 goal. The goal for this year remains at $300,000.
In 2012, funding was distributed to 12 non-profit organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pictou County, Family Services of Eastern Nova Scotia, Highland Community Residential Services, Kids First Association, Laubach Literacy, The Life Shelter, Nova Scotia 211, Pictou County Centre for Sexual Health, Pictou County Early Intervention, Pictou County Council of Seniors, Pictou County Help Line and Pictou County Roots for Youth.
