Homeless for a Night helps raise awareness about homelessness

Children from Tearmann House built a cardboard home for the box city at Homeless for a Night in Westville on Saturday. Stephanie Duggan, child and youth counselor, and Lambrini Soulos, executive director, pose with the elaborate home.

WESTVILLE - The crowd at Homeless For a Night may have been small, but Pictou County Roots for Youth staff and volunteers were just happy to be there.

“Every little bit helps,” said board member Mary Delaney.

She was at Victoria Park with her daughter, Lauren, who also sits on the board at Roots For Youth.

They wanted to show their support and raise awareness about the organizations in the community that help with aspects of homelessness.

One of those organizations is Tearmann House, a shelter for abused women and their children in New Glasgow.

They set up an elaborate house, built by four children staying in the shelter, in the cardboard city at Victoria Park Saturday night.

“I think what it speaks to is that anyone can be homeless,” executive director Lambrini Soulos said about the event.

“Many members of the community are only a paycheque or relationship away from being homeless.”

The children, aged eight to 13, were quite passionate about painting the cardboard house, Soulos said.

It allowed them to show their experience, rather than have adults talk for them.

Information from Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Pictou County Women’s Centre, the Pictou County Help Line and Communities Addressing Suicide Together was also available at the event.

This is the kind of thing Hector MacInnis was looking for when he decided to go.

“I thought maybe I could learn more about it.”

The 25-year-old from Westville was also looking forward to spending a night sleeping under the stars with his friend David Cameron and catching the free movie.

Some other activities for the evening included trivia, Zumba, a barbecue and washer toss.

Roots For Youth hopes to hold the event annually.
