NEW GLASGOW – A breastival will be held in celebration of World Breastfeeding Week to promote and support breastfeeding in Pictou County.
The event will be held at the New Glasgow Farmer’s Market on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. until 12 noon, located at the Riverfront Dome in downtown New Glasgow (115 Jury Street).
A number of activities including puppet theater and story time for young children, displays, literature, opportunities to talk to health professionals and breastfeeding mothers and some nutritious treats will be offered.
Breastfeeding advocates including members of the La Leche League Canada – Pictou County, Pictou County Health Authority staff, and representatives from other community agencies and organizations such as the Baby-Friendly Initiative Committee and the Kid’s First Family Resource Centre will be present to provide information, support and answer questions.
A special activity called the Quintessence Challenge will take place at 11 a.m. at the Breastival. This unique initiative unites breastfeeding mothers around the globe in solidarity as babies all latch on at the same time in their diverse communities to promote and support one another in the natural way to feed infants and young children through breastfeeding.
Over 174 countries worldwide will be celebrating the World Breastfeeding Week theme BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT: CLOSE TO MOTHERS stressing the importance of community based peer supports.
