RRFB Nova Scotia will host the 14th annual Mobius Awards of Environmental Excellence at a luncheon ceremony today (Wednesday) in Halifax.
These provincial awards give special recognition to the schools, businesses, groups and individuals who are innovating in an effort to reduce waste. Winning one of the major awards this year is the Waste Reduction Education Program used by Pictou County’s quick service restaurants
When waste audits found that 69 per cent of customer-generated waste in dining rooms was going into landfills, owners and managers of Pictou County’s quick service restaurants banded together and worked with the staff of Pictou County Solid Waste to address the problem.
By increasing signage, removing single stream garbage containers, and having staff sort the customers’ waste these restaurants have been able to increase organics collection by 46 tonnes since January of this year.
