Today (Thursday), Pictou County’s three Progressive Conservative MLAs-elect took the oath of office and were officially sworn-in to their new roles as members of the Official Opposition shadow cabinet.
“It is an honour to have been elected MLA and to have the support of my constituents looking forward to the years ahead,” said Pictou West MLA Karla MacFarlane. “One thing that rang true no matter where I was during the campaign was that rural Nova Scotia is struggling. In my role as Economic and Rural Development critic, I’ll be making sure the government is taking steps to create much-needed jobs and make life more affordable for families.”
“I’m humbled by the support I received from the residents of Pictou East and I promise to serve them well as their MLA for the next four years,” said Pictou East MLA Tim Houston. “PC leader Jamie Baillie asked me to take on the role of Finance critic in his shadow cabinet and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I believe a government should be balancing the budget and I’ll be holding the new Finance Minister to account to do just that.”
Veteran MLA Pat Dunn was re-elected and will take on a host of new responsibilities in the Official Opposition, including Caucus Chair.
“The people of Pictou Centre have once again trusted me to serve them as their MLA and for that opportunity, I am honoured,” said Pictou Centre MLA Dunn. “As a life-long educator, I’m looking forward to my new role as Education critic and ensuring the government follows through on its commitment to put education first. There are glaring gaps in Nova Scotia’s classrooms and I want to see them addressed.”
