Margie Best’s yard in Stellarton is set up to creep people out on Halloween, thanks to her son, Vernon.
Normally he sets up his spooktacular supplies at his house in Westville, but this year, he decided to scare Stellarton children and their parents at his mother’s house on Hudson Street.
“They love it. They’re amazed. Their parents are a little upset, [telling me] ‘I’m tired of being in your yard,’” Margie Best, Vernon’s mother, said with an apologetic laugh.
He still had other tombstones, zombies and a witch left to add after already spending hours creating the scary scene. He says he does more for Halloween than for Christmas.
Vernon estimates he spent a few hundred dollars on the décor.
“It’s the enjoyment of the kids. It’s not for me,” he said.
He loves to see the look on kids’ faces when they walk by it. He has three little boys himself.
“Even as a little kid, he always wanted to decorate,” Margie said about Vernon, adding that he wanted to be part of the decorations on Halloween night, but Margie didn’t want to scare anyone too much.
She is amazed by the amount of people that are interested in it. She says she counted at least 10 people in her yard one night.
It goes beyond what someone could find in a regular store. The gory aspects were created with expanding foam from a home supply store and coloured with paint.
“I live here and it scared me.”
