Strong fundraising continues at 39th annual Christmas Fund

Although the goal of $85,000 was not achieved at the 39th annual Pictou County Christmas Fund, chairman Camille LeParque was extremely happy with their total of just over $80,000 at the end of the day on Sunday.

“We’re happy with that,” he said. “It’s a touchy game because you try to get more because you know the demand is going to be more and last year we were a little over 80 thousand, but with 80 thousand that’s still a great amount.”

Last year their total was $81,532, which had been an increase from $80,134 in 2011. LeParque said they were going to go with an $80,000 goal this year, but decided they would up it slightly.

“We’re still happy with the result of this year because it will still feed a lot of people.”

The telethon was broadcast from the deCoste Centre in Pictou on Eastlink TV and East Coast FM from 1 to 7:30 p.m. yesterday. Funds raised will go towards helping families in Pictou County with groceries during the holiday season.

Volunteers, who are crucial to the success of the telethon, were on the phones taking pledges, on stage and on air reading pledges throughout the day.

“It was a really great day other than the technical difficulties at the beginning of the show with the TV,” said LePargue. “Other than that everything went well. We had a lot of fun, had a lot of great volunteers, a lot of great entertainment and a lot of people in and out of the studio. We also had a lot of corporate donations, which was an increase from other years, so we were happy with that.”

LeParque has been involved with the telethon for six years, although this year was his first as the chair of the event. He still holds his position as the Pictou County Food Bank liaison. Since it has been running for so many years he doesn’t believe there was anything that was changed from last year or anything that needs to be changed for next year.

“It flows pretty easily and we’ve got it pretty refined now,” he said. “After 39 years things tend to go pretty smoothly. I don’t think we’ll change a whole lot (for next year). We’ll maybe have a few ideas because it will be our 40th anniversary. We aren’t quite sure what that will be yet until we meet next year, but the telethon runs well as it is and they say if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”

He added that he couldn’t thank the volunteers, performers and others involved in the production of the telethon enough for another successful year. He also urged that for those that didn’t use a credit card for their pledges to go to a bank as soon as possible this week to get their donations in.
